A Generation Converging on YYT

Categories: General,Pastor's Pen,Youth & Young Adults

Converge YYTHave you ever anticipated something so much that when it actually happened it seemed like a dream? Tuesday, September 22 was much like that for many of our young adults. That evening we launched our new young adults’ movement called CONVERGE YYT. This was a dream God placed in the hearts of some of the young adults of St. John’s last year and finally, this week, we were able to see it in action.

CONVERGE is a verb – it means to come together, to be a meeting place; with one purpose. This definition in and of itself is the heart behind this new ministry. We have a vision to see students and young adults from all across St. John’s unite and come together with one purpose, our ultimate purpose: to love God and love others.

With that in mind, the team anxiously anticipated our initial event, making sure all the details were in line and that we were approaching it all prayerfully. We have a heart and dream to bring together young adults in our city and then send them out to share that with others. With that propelling our team, seven o’clock Tuesday came and God blew our expectations out of the water. People kept streaming into the building, suddenly we were looking around realizing the event didn’t start for another fifteen minutes and we already had more people in attendance than we ever anticipated.

converge_wideThe night kicked off with a video made by some of our young adults and continued with an incredible time of worship and then an encouraging & challenging word from Pastor Owen. The presence of Jesus was so real and tangible the whole night. I think it could be compared to the joy that a child has the first day they are allowed to take the school bus in kindergarten. When that big yellow bus rounds the corner they are so anxious, eager, and excited that they don’t hesitate – when the time finally comes they just jump on board. It’s like that happened with our experience on Tuesday. For so long we had anticipated, waited, prepared, prayed, and believed that people would unite and come on board with the same dream, passion, and purpose, and then it happened. From that anticipation came the moment where it all kicked off and God met us right there, in that place of expectation and did exceedingly and abundantly more than what we could have ever asked or imagined (Eph. 3). We had just under 100 young adults at our first event, all with one purpose and one desire – to grow in their love for God and be filled to overflow so they could pour that love back to our city – our mission field.

converge_owenPastor Owen gave an incredible word about how so often we complicate the will and purposes of God, when really it all boils down to just loving God and loving others. He taught that as we shift our focus to what is commanded to us in the New Testament (Matt. 22), God will fill in the rest of the blanks in our lives. For me personally, and I know for most of the young adults’ present, it was such a relevant and impacting truth to take home and remember.

We walked away encouraged and absolutely overwhelmed by the fact that when God has a plan for something He will go far beyond what we could think or plan. Any expectations that we had were blown out of the water. We also were able to learn that being in a place of expectation like that is so eye opening, we expected God to work, move, and bring us all together – but yet we still were so shocked and amazed by how much God actually exceeded our wildest expectations. All we can do really is thank God for His faithfulness and continue to pray into what this could become.

CONVERGE will now be meeting bi-weekly and we are believing to grow and be able to reach out both into our city and into the world to share God’s love in practical ways. This is only the beginning for the young adults of St. John’s! God has big plans for this city and we believe that He is going to work through this movement. All that we have to do is trust Him; continuing to love God, love others – and know that He, the ultimate author, will then fill in the blanks.

Please keep us in your prayers and check out our Facebook page if you’re wondering how you can help or get involved.
