Not a cloud in the sky and 30 degrees, not your typical weather here in St. John’s. It’s been an especially terrible summer. July has been one of the coldest in decades and it’s grabbing attention. A headline in The Globe and Mail read, Newfoundland’s Miserable Summer. As the article said, when Newfoundlanders say the weather is bad, it must be pretty bad. USA Today even published an article about our ‘Jucember’ under this heading, Summer is so Bad Here That Cops ‘Arrest’ Weathermen.
Well, today is one of those days in which it’s good to have a short memory. Thoughts of that cold, wet July are being suppressed by the warmth of the sun. What could go possibly wrong on a day like this? The air conditioning in my van is broke. Yup, it’s all windows down for me today. It’s a good thing I have no hair.
Many years ago when living in Lewisporte, NL, my parents were visiting. It was another one of those hot summer days. My parent’s car did not have air conditioning. Dad decided to take my two young boys for a drive. It was hot! My kids weren’t enjoying their sweaty drive and finally one of them spoke up, “Poppy, you have the hottest car in the world” It wasn’t a compliment.
Earlier today, I made my way to a local senior’s home to conduct a service. On the drive, with windows down and wind blowing through my . . . stubble, my broken air conditioner reminded me of life. Not everything about our life works out the way we want it to. Some parts of our life may be broken: broken hearts, broken relationships, and broken dreams. If you feel as if your life is broken please remember:
- You are loved by God. You are loved more than you can imagine. God loves you with an everlasting love.
- In ways in which you cannot see, God’s good purposes are being worked out in your life.
- Stay positive and thankful and choose to be around positive and thankful people.
- Don’t lose sight of your future hope.
Philippians 1:6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
